Ruth Mattison

Ruth Mattison was born on October 13, 1929 to the union of James and Marena Shamley. From this union Ruth had 4 sisters, Ruby (her twin), Veda Marie, Margret and Martha Ann. 6 brothers, Cornell, Kurt, Willie Napoleon, Joe, Ansell and Donnie. All preceded her in death. Ruth received her formal education in the South Carolina public school system. That education was cut short after the death of her mother at an early age. Ruth and her twin Ruby were required to assist in the rearing of her youger siblings which was customary for the time, being the eldest females of the family. Ruth married Melvin Mattison in 1949 and from this union 6 children were born. A dedicated wife and mother, Ruth was employed at Queen Quality Laundry and later received her certificatiion as a Master Butcher, an example of her resiliency. Ruth was then employed for many years at Allied Foods, until an on the job injury forced her into retirement. Ruth loved being a mother and was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends, her macaroni and cheese was her signature dish. Known affectionately Mama Ruth, she was a mother, not only to her own children, but to the neighborhood as well. Ruth was a no-nonsense mother, instilling morals and values, with equal amounts of love and discipline. Loved by many, Ruth departed this life on May 26,2023 peacefully in her sleep., She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her children, Leonard, Melvin Jr., Doris Marie (2003), Shirley Ruth, Dewayne Alfred (Adriane),  and Angela Cecilia.
