Gary Wayne Garrett

April 18, 1943 – August 26, 2019

Gary Garrett, age 76, passed away in his home Monday, August 26, following heart trouble.

Originally from Canada, Gary attended East Detroit High School and then went on to Wayne State University, where he earned a Bachelors in Public Relations and Advertising, and a Masters in English Literature with a concentration in Shakespeare. He was a professor of communications, public relations and English literature at many colleges and universities, including the University of Detroit, Wayne State University, and St. Clair County Community College. He also worked with the Red Cross and other nonprofits. Gary lived in Detroit 50-plus years and was very active in his community, a great friend and neighbor. After retirement, he became the primary caregiver for a lifelong friend. Gary loved Shakespeare and jazz.

Survived by his sister, Maxine West, and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and a nephew.

Memorial Service for Gary Wayne Garrett will be held at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. – Midtown Chapel on September 22nd, 2019, located on 7643 Dexter Ave., Detroit, Michigan 48206. The services begin at 2:00 pm and will end at 4:00 pm.
