Dr. Leon S. Gant

September 28, 1923 – February 13, 2021

Dr. Leon Gant of Detroit, Michigan peacefully passed away at his home in the early morning of February 13th, 2021. He was born in Albion, Michigan on September 28th, 1923. Leon was one of nine siblings born to the late
Julius and Cornelia Gant.

Leon attended Xavier University of Louisiana, America’s only Historically
Black and Catholic University where he began his career path of
dentistry. While at Xavier, Leon met the love of his life, Gloria
Darensburg. They married on April 26, 1943. This blessed union
produced three children, Wanda, Leon Jr, and Stephanie “Stevie”. This
loving marriage lasted until the passing of Gloria in 2007. Leon
continued to Meharry Medical College and graduated from the school
of Dentistry in 1949.

Leon was inducted into the United States Army on January 19th , 1944. He
served in WWII and received a Victory WWII medal, the Korean War, and served the 557th , Motor Ambulance Company in Germany. He
received three Honorable Discharges. While enlisted in the Army, Leon
was employed as a dentist from 1949 to 1951 with a final discharge
date of August 3rd, 1953.

Leon opened his first practice on 12 th Street in Detroit, Michigan, and
after the riots moved his practice to 15101 Plymouth Rd. He believed in
providing quality and affordable services to all. Leon was a member and
one of the presidents of the Wolverine Dental Society, an association
that believed in providing opportunities to African American students
to pursue careers in Dentistry.
Leon was consistent in good deeds and a constant encourager, a son, a
brother, an uncle, a father to three, and a father figure to many but
none better than a child of God who blessed Leon with his first breath
all the way to his last.

He leaves to cherish his memory; two children; Wanda Edwards of
Lansing, Michigan and Stephanie “Stevie” Funderburk of Winston-
Salem, North Carolina; five grandchildren: Donna Edwards, Tasha,
Chardonay, Lauren and Bree Gant, one great-grandson, Karmine Gant
and, two siblings, sister Janet Geary, brother Ronald Gant (Loraine) and
a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Cornelia, wife
Gloria, son Leon Jr., and six siblings: Julius, Clifton, Herbert, Alice
Thomas, Mattie Clayborne, and Cornelia “Needie” Miles.
